Haruhisa Terasaki – Japanese photographer and inventor – has built equipment that merges modern digital techniques with the visual language of early photography, directly referencing pictorialism and historic projection methods. This distinctive approach blurs the boundaries between old and new, offering viewers a completely fresh visual experience.
The works on display prove that in the digital age, photography can still retain the soul of historic processes, giving images painterly depth and atmosphere.
This method of image-making requires a profound understanding of light and a deep sensitivity to the camera. The creation process is intentionally slow, precise, almost meditative – in stark contrast to today’s fast, automated digital photography.
Thanks to Haruhisa Terasaki’s generosity, artists taking part in the exhibition were able to create their photographs using his custom-built cameras. Together they form the Haruhisa Camera Collective – a project dedicated not only to developing this alternative image-making technique but also to promoting the philosophy and aesthetics behind it. The collective explores the value of conscious deceleration, experiment, and imperfection as artistic strategies.
At a time when sharp, technically flawless photographs dominate, the members of the collective seek other paths of expression. Their works demonstrate how imperfection and experimentation can unlock new layers of meaning and emotion, building a bridge between tradition and the present.
