“What, then, is time?If no one asks me, I know;if I wish to explain it to one that asketh, I know not.”— St. Augustine, Confessions

A graphic scheme of the passage of time usually shows an arrow running from left to right. Any chosen point marks a specific moment, defining the others as past or future. Yet in everyday experience, it is different: we only live through the punctual perception of the present, which seamlessly flows into its next manifestations.

The present, by its very nature, is fleeting. Equally elusive are the past, which is no more, and the future, which has not yet arrived. Our only access to any tangible reality seems to be memory, in which we preserve fragments of impressions inherited from the endlessly passing acts of the present.

In daily life, we are shaped to perceive the world in a cause-and-effect order, divided into segments aligned with the arrow of time. Relativistic physics has challenged this order, pointing to the relativity of both time and space, whose parameters depend on the observer’s perspective, matter, and gravitational force.

Perhaps, as Isaac Newton put it, time – and space as well – are independent aspects of objective reality, a configuration of infinite variants of its subsystems, within which we exist as a spacetime subset with its own characteristics. And similarly, along with other subsets, we co-create a greater whole, inscribed into the construction of the Universe through our intentions, efforts, errors, and the ordinary bustle of daily life.

Photography and its related media reflect the scheme of passing time. But above all, they serve as carriers of memory, often more lasting than a single human life. Photography is also a language of expression, allowing us to approach individual, authorial interpretations of the very notion of time.

The exhibition will be open until January 15, 2025.
